  • White Painted Hall Table Takes up Position

A hall table is often the very first piece of furniture a guest sees when they step through your front door. It sets the tone for your entire home—so when one of our customers brought us their heavily varnished oak hall table, we were delighted to give it a new lease of life. The piece in question was a classic hall table: beautiful bones, solid construction, with elegant slatted side panels and a single drawer. The customer's vision? A clean, fresh white finish that would brighten their hallway and complement their modern classic interior. Here's how we did it.

The table arrived in good structural condition—a solid oak piece that had clearly been well looked after. However, the heavy factory varnish gave it a glossy, orange-tinged finish that felt more 1990s pine than timeless classic. The drawer pull was a simple brass oval handle, which we were asked to keep.

The customer's brief was clear: paint the base and frame in a clean, bright white while retaining the natural warmth of the oak top. This two-tone approach—painted frame with a natural wood surface—is a hugely popular choice at the moment, and for good reason. It gives a piece real depth and stops the finish from looking flat or clinical.

Painting the White Painted Hall Table

Step 1

Before any preparation or painting, we wiped down the entire table with a sugar soap solution to remove any grease, wax residue, or surface grime. Paint simply won't adhere properly to a dirty surface, no matter how well you sand it. The table was left to dry fully before moving on.

Step 2

We sanded with a medium-grit sandpaper (80–120 grit) to key the entire surface — sanding with the grain of the wood to break down the varnish and give the primer something to grip.

Then we sanded the oak top separately with a finer grit to smooth out any marks and refresh the surface.

Step 3

Next, we applied a specialist shellac-based stain-blocking primer from Zinsser to the painted area. This seals the wood and creates the perfect base.

Step 4

With the primer dry, we applied the first coat of the Dulux eggshell paint in a classic, clean white—a shade chosen by the customer to complement their hallway's neutral palette. We use paints specifically formulated for furniture and cabinetry, which are far more durable than standard wall paint and designed to resist the knocks and bumps that hall furniture inevitably receives. Step 5

Once the first coat was fully dry, we lightly sanded the entire painted surface again with 320-grit sandpaper. This knocks back any brush marks, dust nibs, or raised grain and creates an ultra-smooth surface for the final coat. Everything was wiped down again before the next step.

Step 6

We gave the hall table a second coat. This coat delivers that clean, even, professional finish. By this stage, the white is rich and solid, the surface is smooth, and the piece is beginning to look exactly as the customer had imagined.

Step 7

Then we re-fitted the small drawer pull with its two screws. Sometimes we are asked to fit new handles, but this handle was up to the task.

Step 8

The final and vital step was varnishing the top surface. We applied two coats of a clear, hard-wearing furniture varnish in a matt finish. More and more, we are using the Smith and Rodgers Rocktop. Typically we use the matt finish, but occasionally we are asked to use the satin or gloss finish with the furniture.
