This painted oak table was in very good condition when we were asked to paint the legs and chassis and then sand down and varnish the top surface. Of course like many dining tables of its era, it was very brown indeed. This extended from a dark brown varnish to the legs and chassis and an equally dark finish to the tabletop itself. The net effect? The dark varnish managed to hide the beauty of the oak itself. And that's always a bore for a natural material. Hence the dining room furniture transformation brief.

Painted Oak Table Shows its Class
We removed the table top from the chassis and legs before we sanded it separately. Once we had sanded the top, we revealed a very pleasant pale oak top surface with its typical oak grain very much evident. Yes, there were a few blemishes and penetrating marks. But these added to the character of the painted oak table.
Then we gave the tabletop and all its extending leaves several coats of varnish with a Dulux satin varnish. It's always an easy varnish to apply and gives a consistent finish.
The painted oak table waits for another coat of varnish.
After that, we hand sanded the barley twist style legs before painting with a pure white Dulux eggshell.
Completing the Painted Oak Table Transformation
Finally we put everything back together and the furniture transformation was complete.
In summary, a very pleasant oak dining table. Small enough for a smallish London property, but also big enough, when extended, for any family event.
