We haven't featured a butchers block before, but we have painted small tables that would be quite at home in the kitchen. But this kitchen butchers block was very much at home in the kitchen. We were asked to simply paint it. The challenge was to paint it a different colour to its original colour.

Painted Butchers Block Looks Cool in the Kitchen
Originally it was a shade of grey and it just didn't work in a relatively new kitchen build. So we were asked to prepare it for paint and then paint in a Dulux brilliant white. We took the opportunity as well to sand down the bare wooden top and varnish it with Rocktop from Smith and Rodger.
The butchers block wasn't out of the ordinary, two plain-fronted drawers facing the same way with interesting 'finger' openings, strong and durable. And then there were two open shelves below the block itself, open-slatted, which is fairly characteristic of your typical butchers block. Sometimes the shelves are flat and contained, but these were slatted.

Preparing and Painting the Butchers Block
We simply sanded the block before we primed and undercoated. After that, we gave the block at least two coats of brilliant white eggshell paint. We followed that with several coats of Rocktop varnish. We like to put on several coats of the varnish. Two or three coats would probably do the job, but we often end up putting four or five on with a light sand in between coats.
The net effect, very positive, very bright, very white and everything that our customer wanted.
