This revamped painted cupboard will be familiar to anyone with pine dining room furniture. Or, indeed any pine furniture. Because it's a standard design with two cupboard doors opening into a main interior and a single internal shelf that's two thirds of the way up. Yes, a classic. The build is solid but the wood was very knotty. Of course that's no surprise because much of the pine furniture made in the United Kingdom is knotty and is simply varnished after it's built. That's the style.

Revamped Painted Cupboard in its New Dining Room Home
The cupboard doors were attached with steel hinges, with nothing particularly sophisticated about them. Plain door knobs on each door about half the way down were also standard-size.
In its former life the cupboard was used for general storage in the playroom: CDs, papers, drawing kit and toys. We were asked to paint the cupboard and give it a new lease of life.
Essentially a revamped painted cupboard was called for.
The brief needed us to strip down the top surface and remove the various watermarks, scuffs and blemishes (crayons and felt tips had also got in on the act) that had accumulated over the years. With that done, we were asked to apply a satin varnish.
Steps for the Painted Cupboard Revamp
Step 1
Remove the cupboard doors and hinges.
Step 2
Sand everything by hand and machine sand the top surface.
Step 3
Mask the cupboard edges.
Step 4
Prime and undercoat with Zinsser products.
Step 5
Apply a top coat of StiffKey Blue in a Dulux diamond eggshell.
Step 6
Apply a top coat of RockTop varnish, probably four coats as a minimum.
Step 7
Reassemble everything.
We chose RockTop in the satin finish.
Normally we use a matt finish but on this occasion it was satin for a richer, shiny finish.
Rock top is currently our favourite varnish and we source it from the Dulux decorators centre. It's very easy to apply because the tremendous finish dries easily and of course it does not yellow. And that's very important for new varnish.
Revamped Painted Cupboard Highlights
The revamped painted cupboard wasn't the most elegant item of furniture in the modern home. But it was certainly functional with a capacious form.

Our brief was to bring a touch of style and elegance ready for its new location in a modern dining room.
The overall effect is very pleasing and the revamped painted cupboard is now a key item in a modern dining room. Its colour adds a decent amount of contrast to the wooden floor, and its top surface reinforces the other wooden surfaces on view.
