  • Sideboard Painted with Ammonite Ready for New Role

This pair of sideboards were very well made of high quality oak. Probably made in England and at least 20 years old. They showed very little sign of wear and tear or damage, not least because the wood was high quality. However, the wood had turned orange. You will find this with oak. It really does change colour with time and if your room can accommodate the orange colour, and eventually the blackened colour, then that's no problem.

However, in this house the colours were beginning to jar with the other decorative colours in their respective rooms.

Sideboard Painted Project Provides Colour

So we were asked to give the sideboards a painted makeover. The one sideboard was destined for the dining room and the other sideboard was destined for the bathroom.

However, we used the same colour for both pieces. That was the Farrow and Ball Ammonite colour.

But we mixed it into a Dulux diamond eggshell paint. We used to paint everything with the Farrow and Ball eggshell paint, but then they changed the recipe and we could no longer sand the painted surfaces in quite the same way. Hence the pivot towards Dulux diamond eggshell and also Dulux heritage eggshell as the main eggshell paints we use.

Sideboard Painted with Ammonite: Key Steps

  • Remove the handles and hinges
  • Remove doors and drawers
  • Sand the furniture with power sanders and by hand
  • Apply a primer coat of paint (Zinsser BIN)
  • Give the furniture a coat of undercoat
  • Apply the Dulux top coats
  • Reassemble the metalwork

The overall results were very positive and certainly both pieces now look at home. One in the dining room and the other in the family bathroom. A very pleasing furniture transformation.

Sideboard Painted for the Bathroom

The sideboard painted with Ammonite now looks quite at home in its new position in the family bathroom.
