  • Large Painted Chest of Drawers Finds its Space

This large painted chest of drawers was a robust item of solid pine furniture, very much in a tradition that we'd all recognise. Its three deep, full width drawers are certainly capacious and sit below two smaller drawers that are no mean size. You're probably not going to label this large chest of drawers at all stylish. But you might be tempted to call it useful, practical, robust and thoroughly needed in a modern family home.

Large Painted Chest of Drawers Finds its Own Space

Our brief was to paint the large chest of drawers with a shaded white paint, in the Dulux Heritage range. It's perhaps not as popular a colour as it once was, but it's very versatile and it's well worthy of any consideration.

Main Bedroom Home for this Large Painted Chest of Drawers

A total of five drawers made this an ideal size for a main bedroom. But, its brown pine effect ensured that it needed smartening up. Something that we were asked to do.

We began the project in our usual way when we removed the drawer knobs before the sanding and painting. We like to do this wherever possible as it makes sanding much more effective. And it also gives a better paint finish.

Large Chest of Drawers at the Sanding Stage

Waiting for Sanding

  • We removed the drawer knobs ready for painting separately.
  • We sanded the furniture by hand using a medium grit sandpaper, and followed with a finer grain paper. Once sanded, we removed the dust with a vacuum and then tack/ glue cloths. We will machine sand when it's necessary, but on this furniture a hand sand was the best option as everything was to be painted.
  • Then we taped the drawer edges before we primed the drawers and the main frame/ body of the chest of drawers with Zinsser BIN. It's the primer of choice as it obliterates all staining and tannins in the wood.
  • Once everything was dry (about an hour later), we undercoated with a Dulux water-based undercoat.
  • And then we followed this up with two coats of Shaded White in a Dulux heritage eggshell paint.
  • Finally, we removed the tape from the drawer edges and replaced the wooden drawer knobs, fully painted.

Back in its Own Space

With everything back together again, we arranged a Surrey delivery and the large painted chest of drawers now looks fully at home in the main bedroom. With years of service ahead and a delighted customer, that’s important.

Whether it’s a large or small chest of drawers for your bedroom that you want to be smartened up with a new paint finish, than we can help. Because we can paint your furniture.
