This impressive old chest of drawers is really quite ancient. Since it has to be at least 80 years old. In its original state it was coated with a very dark brown varnish that showed its age, but was in pretty good condition. In fact we only needed to glue and clamp two of the drawers. And as a painted chest of drawers it's now set for another long practical life.

Paint that Chest of Drawers this Autumn
It’s a tall piece of furniture. However, it only has three wide drawers. But each drawer is very deep. Altogether the unit is very capacious and extremely useful. The detailing is also exquisite on the two flanks. with beading around each drawer plus the moulding at the base of the chest. The round feet add to the interest of the unit and take away from its sheer angularity.
Old White for this Painted Chest of Drawers
We were asked to paint this chest of drawers in the
Farrow and Ball colour
Old White. It’s a classic colour for old furniture.
We used a
Dulux diamond eggshell paint and then applied a coat or two of Annie Sloan clear wax to give the whole unit an extra depth.
We tidied up the original handles and escutcheons which were all in good condition. They just needed a bit of a polish and fresh fittings. So they went back as well.
Key Steps for this Painted Chest of Drawers
- Remove all the handles and hinges.
- Sand the furniture with power sanders and by hand.
- Apply a primer coat of paint, and anti-knotting.
- Give the chest of drawers a coat of undercoat.
- Apply top coats, typically two or three coats of eggshell.
- Give everything a light shabby with sandpaper and follow with two coats of wax.
- Polish everything.
