  • Painted Cabinet Looks the Business in New Setting

This painted cabinet was very typical of many 2-door, brown wooden cabinets sold in the UK in the last 40 years. The two doors are small in size with a reasonably sized interior with a single shelf. Below the limited interior there's a single wide drawer that is capacious enough. And then, there's an open shelf at near floor level.

All of the wood was brown, a very brown varnish indeed. Redeeming features, perhaps, were the black hammered metalwork hinges and cabinet drop-handles. Equally redeeming was the build quality of the cabinet. A testament to the British carpenters that built it.

A Painted Cabinet Complements other Furniture in this Room

We were asked to paint this furniture and give it a new lease of life ready for its new role in a redecorated sitting room.

First of all, we gave the unit a good sand after we had removed all of the metalwork and taken the doors off. Then, we gave the edges of the doors a good sand, to make sure that they fitted once we had painted them! This is especially important for doors, if not drawers. If we didn't do this, we'd risk doors swelling later in the warm home setting.

Painted Cabinet Restored to Crowning Glory

With the paint, first we used a Zinsser primer and undercoat, essential to cover the old oak wood bleed. Following that, we gave the painted cabinet several coats of Crown eggshell (Soft Ochre) topcoat. We don't normally paint with a Crown paint, but we wanted a complete match with the other fixtures and fittings in the home.

This painted cabinet transformation ticks all the design criteria.

After we had reassembled the furniture we returned the painted cabinet to its home.
