This two tone painted dining table was destined for a holiday home on the coast in the West country. Our job was to sand down the pine table and give it the two-tone paint and varnish treatment. It's always a popular treatment that's particularly effective with furniture that has to do some hard work. Hard working dining tables fall into this category and so do hard working holiday home dining room tables.

The project wasn't troublesome. But we were relieved that we could remove the tabletop. Because the sheer size of the table meant moving it outside in the sanding yard was a chore! Most tables of this size do have removable tops for reasons of practicality.

To get the two-tone painted dining table ready for action we followed some familiar steps.

Steps to Complete the Painted Table

Step 1

To achieve this look we removed the top of the table that was secured with locking wedges and small screws.

Step 2

We sanded the top and the edges of the tabletop, removing all of the marks and stains of its heavy use.

Step 3

Then we removed the drawer handle from the single drawer.

Step 4

We hand sanded the table chassis, the legs and the single drawer.

Step 5

With this done, we followed up with a primer and an undercoat before we gave the table a coat of Dulux white eggshell paint to suit its holiday home destination.

Step 6

Then we applied a coat of Rocktop varnish, matt, to the tabletop. We typically apply four or five coats of Rocktop for maximum durability.

Step 7

Finally, we put the tabletop back on the table chassis with the securing wedges, refitted the handle to the front of the drawer face and the job was done. A good clean finish for a working table.
