This painted sideboard is yet another example of a very fine dining room furniture revamp. It was well-built, probably of English beech, and was very much loved. But the decorations in the home were due for change. And so the brown characteristic colour of the sideboard just wasn't going to work with the new decorative style.

Revamped Painted Sideboard
So we were asked to give the sideboard a paint transformation to help it settle in with its new dining room surroundings.
And we did that with a Carbon Blue colour from Fired Earth that we secured as an eggshell paint. The eggshell finish is definitely the most popular finish with which we work. Of course others are popular, matt and satin for example, but eggshell is still in prime position. We obtained the Fired Earth paint from Brewers, the national paint merchants with local sites in Farnborough, Woking and Guildford.
We sanded down the top surface of the sideboard, removed all of the blemishes, watermarks and rings, and then applied some Rustins wood dye before a matt finish varnish. The varnish that we are currently using is Smith & Rodger RockTop, which we source from the Farnborough Dulux Decorators centre. It's a tough, long-lasting varnish. And, importantly, it doesn't yellow.
All in all, it's a great example of a good piece of furniture transformation.
List of Steps for the Painted Sideboard
A painted sideboard project such as this one should take about two weeks to complete, from collection to delivery back home. But we always have the weather to contend with in the winter months…
