  • Painted Table Makeover Looks a Shade of Gray

This small two-drawer table is undoubtedly an antique, because it's more than 60 years old, at least. It's well-formed, comprising two drawers and four very well-turned legs. It features some very heavy decoration on the drawer fronts, the surrounds of the table, and also on the table top with some very deep carving. The original metal drawer furniture was also in good condition, and that's always useful. An ideal prospect for a painted table makeover.

A Painted Table Makeover for this Old Table

The problem that the table had of course, was that it sported a very brown varnish. And brown varnished furniture is still out of mode. We were asked to give the small table a painted makeover and make it fit for the 21st century. And, of course, a continued existence in a newly decorated sitting room.

The first job that we had was to remove all the dirt and detritus, dust, etc. that had built up on the piece.

Steps for the Painted Table Makeover

  • Remove the metal drawer handles.
  • Sand by hand and with machine, taking care not to erode the carvings.
  • Mask up the drawer edges.
  • Apply Primer and undercoat with Zinsser BIN.
  • Paint a top coat with Dulux Diamond eggshell.
  • Remove masking tape and reassemble.

So we gave it a good sand down, a primer coat of Zinsser BIN, and then an undercoat with the same paint. We chose Zinsser BIN because of its ability to cover wood staining or bleed.

And we followed that up with a Dulux Diamond eggshell in the colour Pavilion Gray. That's a Farrow and Ball colour, and it's very popular with our customers.

Table Makeover. Before and After

This small table, or console table, had earned its keep with years of service. But it needed a fresh look for the modern day home.

A sanding and application of Dulux Diamond eggshell in the Farrow and Ball colour, Pavilion Gray, did the job.

Overall, it's a very successful small table, and it looks quite in keeping with the rest of its new surroundings. In another location it's probably shallow enough to also work as a console table in a hallway. Certainly that's a home for many similar items of furniture.
