When does your classic British furniture item, the hall table, become a console table? Perhaps when it becomes a painted console table. This particular item of furniture has experienced such a furniture transformation. From varnished pine table to painted console table, it's quite a makeover. And it's now in pole position to make quite an entrance in this modern home.

Painted Console Table Makes an Entrance
Let's be clear, as a pine hall table this furniture could have graced many a home for many years to come. Hard-working, solid and built to last by skilled carpenters it was a classic piece of brown furniture. And that, of course, was the problem.
Because the homeowner wanted a makeover for the home and that had to include several items of furniture. And everything had to be painted with Cornforth White (a Farrow and Ball colour). Of course we painted with a Dulux diamond eggshell with a colour match for Cornforth White. It's something we've done for several years since the Farrow and Ball manufacturers changed the eggshell mixture and it became tricky to sand between coats. I'm sure that they've now fixed the problems they had, but we're committed to the Dulux diamond eggshell and, of course the Dulux heritage paints as well.
Painted Console Table: Work in Progress
We removed the table's varnish by sanding mechanically and by hand for the moulded edges and the drawer fronts.

Before Painting
After we had removed the stylish brass handle on the drawer front we also removed the top of the table to make sanding that bit easier. After a quick machine sand we followed up with a hand sand before we started to paint.
We paint with a primer and then an undercoat. And with pine furniture we're always on the lookout for knots that we aim to conceal with a solvent-based primer or anti-knotting paint.
We finished the painting project with several coats of Cornforth White before we reassembled the drawer brass fittings, removed the masking tape and admired the work. A good job and all set for its new home setting.
