Painted Dining Chairs Turn the Tables on Style

Your classic dining chairs are typically brown in colour, made interesting with the style and cut of the frame and the seat cushion. These dining room chairs were no different. Made of a pale brown beech wood, they were strong and dependable. However, it was certainly time to replace the seat covers and also time for a change of colour. So we were asked to give the chairs a furniture transformation with French Gray. It's an ideal colour choice for painted dining chairs, being both interesting and not over-flashy.

First, we removed the seat covers, simply screwed in from the base, and then gave the chairs a good sanding and wipe down. Most furniture will accommodate a hand sand if it's in good condition. And, of course, we use the power sanders when we have to sand away water marks and staining on wooden surfaces. That's particularly necessary when we aim to achieve the two-tone look for furniture.

We followed that with two coats of primer/ undercoat. Increasingly we use the Zinsser primers, either in water-based or solvent-based formats depending on the paint job. They are good paints to use for priming and have excellent opacity, with the solvent-based products covering wood knots exceptionally well.

Then we followed with at least two, and perhaps three, coats of French Gray in a Dulux diamond eggshell paint. We like painting with this eggshell paint, and increasingly now we're also painting furniture with the Dulux heritage products.

And finally we were ready for piecing everything together again and arranging delivery back home.
