This medium-sized drop-down painted white desk was in very good condition for its age. Built of oak, it displayed all of the carpentry skills that you might expect of a piece of furniture built at least 60 years ago. A simple drop-down flap exposed the inner capacity of the desk, comprising two small drawers and cubby holes for letters, envelopes and correspondence. Below the desk flap, there are three large capacious drawers for files and other stationery. Altogether a very effective storage and industrious writing area.

Painted White Desk Ready for another 60 Years
We were asked to prepare the desk for a new paint transformation. Not least because it had all the challenges of brown furniture in a modern home setting.
Our first step was to remove all of the metalwork, hinges and take the desk flap and support struts to pieces.
We then gave the furniture a good sand, a vacuum and finally a wash with white spirits. At this stage we also glued and clamped some of the woodwork. It wasn't in bad shape, but some bits needed a bit of attention.
Painted White Desk: Work in Progress

Removing metalwork

sanding and cleaning
We followed with a primer, Zinsser BIN, an undercoat, and then several coats of Dulux diamond eggshell that we had mixed into a Farrow and Ball colour, Old White.
With all the painting done, we pieced together the desk, reattached the desk flap, all of the hinges and other metalwork.
