This small pine dressing table was in good order structurally, testament to the skilled craftsmen who built it many years ago. It's a dressing table style that will be familiar to many UK home owners and it features four drawers with a capacious storage space. Our brief was simple. Deliver a painted two tone dressing table capable of withstanding many more years of use in a busy home.
Like many home owners, there was a growing dissatisfaction with the brown furniture that we often take for granted. Of course, once it was all we could get!
Our first step was to remove the handles from the drawer fronts. We replaced these, because we wanted to achieve the same wood dyed look on the handles as the top surface.
Next, we gave the furniture a good sand on the top surface and elsewhere, a vacuum and a white spirits wash.
We followed this with a primer, Zinsser BIN, an undercoat, and then several coats of Dulux diamond eggshell brilliant white. It's always a favourite.
Finishing the Look for the Painted Two Tone Dressing Table
With all the painting done, we dyed the top surface, and the drawer handles to a consistent colour with Rustins, before we started the varnish. In this case a water-based varnish from Dulux.
The effect was certainly transformative. And probably as voguish as another recent project. We'll also take a look at some of the other pieces we completed for the room in our next article.
