The starting point for this Pavilion Gray painted desk was an old wooden desk that showed signs of being varnish-stripped in the past. As a desk it was entirely functional with deep drawers and a spacious cupboard to the side of the knee-hole. Ornamentally it was plain except for some moulding on the front panel of the cupboard. Our brief was to paint with Pavilion Gray, a Farrow and Ball colour, that we mixed into a Dulux diamond eggshell paint.

Pavilion Gray Painted Desk Set for Action
We removed the small brass door and drawer fittings and the cupboard hinges before we set about plugging holes and gaps; of which there were many.
We followed this with a good sand, vacuum and then a spirits wash to remove the last residues of mess.
Old Wooden Desk
The old wooden desk wasn't in terrible condition as it was dry and free of rot. But it did feature some significant gaps and holes that we needed to fill, a typical feature of the usual furniture problem.

Before Our Shabby Chic Success
The old brass drawer and door fittings also had to go. it's not unusual for brass fittings to "clash" with gray paint tones.
We followed with a coat of the Zinsser 1-2-3 primer. It's a water-based primer that's ideal for such a job. If the pine construction was characterised by wood knots, then we might have been tempted to use Zinsser BIN, a spirits-based primer. But this wasn't the case with the desk.
New Metalwork for the Pavilion Gray Painted Desk
We gave the desk two or three coats of Pavilion Gray before we reassembled everything with new handles and hinges. The overall effect for the Pavilion Gray painted desk was very tidy and modern. Yes, a very different style to our last painted white desk, but very functional and an excellent work space.
