  • Two-Tone Painted Chest of Drawers Looks the Part

This two-tone painted chest of drawers is the final piece of the bedroom furniture set that we painted for a modern local home (dressing table and bedside tables). Once again, the chest of drawers will be totally familiar to so many UK residents. It's a capacious five-drawer chest of drawers that was well-built with standard pine timber. It featured proper dovetail joints and strong bottoms to the drawers (often an oversight with more modern drawers). The handles were also a standard pine and everything had the yellow/ brown varnish that's also instantly recognisable.

However, it did look dated. And that's typically the problem with old brown furniture. It's accommodating, capacious, useful, but it's brown and the varnish is a bit chipped! However, a paint treatment can always set that right. So that was the brief for this chest of drawers: Deliver a two-tone painted chest of drawers that's more suited to the modern decorations of today.

We followed our usual steps for this furniture. And yes, we did remove the existing drawer knobs and replace them with new pine ones. It's really the most cost-effective way to do this. One could be there all day trying to remove old stain and varnish from these small curved surfaces! The only exception might be where the drawer knobs are authentically ancient and have plenty of character.

Key Steps for the Two-Tone Painted Chest

  • Remove all the drawer knobs
  • Sand the top of the chest of drawers with a power sander and finish by hand
  • Sand everything else by hand
  • Mask the drawer edges and interior runners
  • Apply a primer coat of paint, and anti-knotting
  • Give the furniture a coat of undercoat
  • Apply top coats, typically two or three
  • Apply a Rustins wood dye and Dulux varnish to the top surface and also the new drawer handles
  • Remove all the masking tape, re-assemble and deliver

This proved a very worthwhile painting job, and with all the other items, a very effective project for a local home.
